Abstract
A portable sensing system based on the combination of novel sensing technologies is discussed here. The system can detect the presence of biological contamination in water based on electrochemical and optical methods. The system incorporates a two-step process by means of electrochemical potentiostatic instrument1 and quenched-fluorescence oxygen detector2 Firstly, a qualitative indicator of the presence or absence of contamination is provided by the application of voltammetric techniques to a water sample. If contamination is detected, a further investigation of the sample is provided by the second step of the process based on the assessment of microbial contamination by quenched-fluorescence sensing.
