Abstract
Emerging B-ISDN networks rely on ATM interfaces based on the existing plesyochronous digital hierarchy (PDH) infrastructure. In the short-term, the natural evolution will be based on synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) interfaces. From the system platform architecture point of view, broadband systems will evolve from proprietary service implementations to open and standard driven solutions, that encompass network transparency and services portability features to users and service providers. In the medium-term, novel network interfaces based upon high density wavelength division multiplexing (HDWDM), will enhance networks with configuration flexibility and the allocation of huge bandwidth resources
