Abstract :
The paper seeks to examine the British press and television coverage of ALH84001. This involved a content analysis of newspaper and television coverage and focus groups to evaluate the audience reception. Coverage in the British media is extensive and reflects scepticism of the research findings. The relationship between science and the media is also examined with respect to gaining funding for future research. A large number of “experts” are cited reflecting the diverse themes in the coverage. The focus groups showed that members of the audience actively engage with scientific information on a regular basis. As a news story “Life on Mars?” is remembered for its initial impact in the media, and the role of “fossil” evidence. This neglects the evolving process of scientific research
