Abstract :
The author outlines the problems encountered with moisture condensation in the bearing cavities and internal windings of large motors and generators when proper equipment storage procedures are not practised. He discusses the moisture condensation problems associated with the operation and shutdown of large motors and generators due to weather conditions at the location of the offshore platforms. The platforms discussed here are located on the outer continental shelf in the Santa Barbara Channel of the coast of California. Possible solutions to these problems are examined. It is suggested that large motors and generators should be stored in their original shipping containers, preferably in a warehouse with controlled temperature, dust, dew point, shock, and vibration. Motors and generators enclosed with dust covers that are air tight and stored outdoors should be packed with adequate desiccant bags for moisture control. If space heaters are energized, the electrical machines should not be enclosed in sealed dust covers so that moisture can escape. Motors and generators with antifriction bearings and sleeve bearings should be rotated once every month to keep an oil film on the shaft and bearing surfaces. The equipment must then be resealed to keep moisture out
