Abstract :
A thermostat nonlinearity provides the simplest form of history-dependent discontinuity in feedback control. The author considers a class of distributed parameter control problems with feedback involving a thermostat whose time-dependent setting is taken as a control to be optimized. Existence of an optimal control for each (known) input is shown, and a formulation is presented of the problem with a stochastically modeled input
