Abstract
This paper describes the design and implementation details of the RHODOS communication security facility which provides encryption and decryption of messages. A software-based approach is taken and both the DES and LOKI cryptosystems are supported. The communication security facility is positioned at the level of the transport protocol. The study of the cost of providing secure communication is also presented
