Abstract
The authors review three-phase power (kW) metering and analyze the effects of harmonics on power measurement. It is shown that the harmonic content of the load waveform affects power measurement significantly. It is suggested that it is necessary to be cognizant of harmonics in relationship to kWh and power-factor billing. The application of digital microprocessor technology to power metering permits the measurement of power very precisely. It is possible with sample data techniques to determine true real power or kWh consumed by the power distribution system or resolve poor power factor questions
