Abstract :
Technical issues associated with the creation of new operations functions for an intelligent, programmable network are addressed. An extended example incorporating network traffic management and an automatic collect call (ACC) service is used to illustrate the need to build service-specific operations capabilities into a service and the need for operations designs during the service creation process. Two potential designs of the ACC service are described, and some potential overload scenarios based on one of these designs are listed. The network traffic management (NTM) requirements for the service are developed; based on these and the service design, the network traffic management design is derived. The authors summarize the service-specific NTM design process illustrated by the example, highlighting the ways in which a service creation environment can assist in this process. Possible future directions in this area are discussed
