Abstract :
A simple state-dependent assignment rule is derived for reducing the probability of blocking in the allocation of an arriving job stream among parallel stations with finite buffers. To compare the performance of the proposed assignment rule with that of an optimum state-dependent rule, the author presents numerical results for an example in which a job stream of arrival rate 4.0 is offered to two workstations operating in parallel. Without burdensome computation, the rule achieves near-optimum performance
