            Abstract : 
An important theorem, concerned with the plane wave scattering by a period of infinite regular grating, is proved in general. When using only the symmetry and physically evident conditions it is shown that the reflection coefficient of a grating mode, defined properly and rescaled to the discontinuity center, is a pure imaginary value even in the presence of dissipation.
