Abstract :
Relatively large message-based multiprocessors can be built but their effective use is limited by inadequate software support and understanding of such systems. An important area that must be addressed is process management. A general message-based multiprocessor system should support dynamic process criterion. This requires algorithms that can decide where to place processes quickly, using small amounts of information, and work concurrently with the application processes. This problem raises a number of issues, including the type of scheduling algorithm that should be used, the information that should be used in the decision-making process, and the communication required between the application processes and the operating system to effectively schedule processes
