Abstract
The authors present a backbone architecture for ISDN (integrated services digital network) systems by which systems for a switching network, a signaling network, and a telecommunications management network of an ISDN can be designed on the basis of the same architecture in order to support the easy expansion and improvement required for more reliable, inexpensive, and advanced ISDN services in the future. Based on this architecture, the ISDN-LS and no.7 SP (signal point)/STP (signal transfer point) systems are already in commercial operation, and other systems are scheduled to be put into operation by the middle of 1991
