Abstract
In this paper, we propose area transmission efficiency to evaluate the performance of single-user multiple-input multiple-output (SU-MIMO) and multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) in wireless mesh networks (WMNs). The area transmission efficiency is the number of packets that can be transmitted per unit time and per area, and is calculated by considering the multiplexing effect of MIMO and the density of transmitting nodes. The performance of SU-MIMO and MU-MIMO is evaluated and compared in term of the area transmission efficiency in WMNs. As a result, the area transmission efficiency of MU-MIMO can be superior to that of SU-MIMO when the number of queueing packets is small. Conversely, this relationship is reversed when the number of queueing packets is enough large. In addition, by selecting the transmission packets so as to reduce the number of receiving nodes, MU-MIMO is always superior to SU-MIMO.
