Abstract :
A concept for an automatic planner to coordinate assets for the self-protection of a combat aircraft is described. The planner will provide the adaptivity to dynamic and uncertain mission situations by assembling response plans in a hierarchical fashion. Long-term plans are sketched in general terms using default estimates of performance. Specific plans are assembled incrementally as needed, by activating lower-level planners. The planner is an element of a conceptual threat assessment/response (TAR) system. The TAR system concept is being developed as an independent research effort in response to a generic need to develop technology for integrating system assessment, planning, and control functions in tactical aircraft
