Abstract :
This paper presents a novel morphological filter-assisted threshold detector aimed at detecting very low amplitude impulses in a wide-sense stationary noise environment. A one-dimensional morphological filter is applied as a second stage processor to a conventional threshold detector which is set to operate with a much lower threshold level as a consequence. This algorithm was developed to improve the detection of impulses from high voltage switchgear; however, it can easily be ported to other areas requiring similar sensitive impulse detection sensitivities
