Abstract :
A study was undertaken to develop a model for an in-flight diagnostic system that could be applied to the National Aero-Space plane, and to implement a computer program to demonstrate the feasibility of that model as a basis for a system status monitor. The model developed features a double-hierarchy structure, one for the aircraft functions to be diagnosed, and another for the diagnostic functions to be performed. The hierarchical nature of both the system knowledge and the functions that use the knowledge allow decomposition of the diagnostic task into relatively independent and manageable parts
