Abstract :
Summary form only given. A software reliability standards effort was initiated by the IEEE Computer Society in 1982 that addressed the need to better understand the relationship between the reliability of the final delivered product and the processes and product attributes which can be assessed during software development and operation. The progress and results are reported for this effort by industry, government, and academia to identify and select a standard set of measures that could be applied in the different life-cycle phases and that are indicative of those aspects of the development process which are contributors to reliability at the time of delivery. The authors describe the process of selecting measures for inclusion in the standard, the application of measures to projects to assess both product and process maturity, and how to implement and modify a reliability measurement program as project needs dictate
