Abstract :
A portable telephone system design is reported by means of which one can telephone at any time, at any place, and to any place. The frequency spectrum of 2.23 MHz (87+2 radio communication and control channels) is required for the system to accommodate each mobile station in a metropolitan area with pertinent communication traffic density (0.05 Erlang/day). The system uses a microcell of radius 25-100 m and the radio output power from a portable telephone set will be 10 mW. To perform effective communication to or from the portable telephone set, the following concepts are proposed: adaptation of the combination of narrow and wide-area calling systems, cordless telephone and pager mode, two types of waiting mode, and a decentralized registration system related with personal identification information
