  • Abstract
A parallel model for constructing protocol converters which removes the limitation of a previous parallel model that allows only one-to-one message mapping of two protocols is proposed. For two protocols specified in the communicating finite state machine (CFSM) model, the proposed method consists of three steps: (1) partitioning the mapping functions of the two target protocols into two separate entities; (2) deriving two half-converters to translate transition sequences between the two target protocols; and (3) inserting error-recovery transitions into the half-converters for half-gateway architecture implementation. The proposed conversion scheme can be implemented not only in a single-gateway architecture using two concurrently executing processes but also in a half-gateway architecture with error-recovery features included
