Abstract :
Theoretical studies as well as preliminary experimental results indicate that radar remote sensing of the sea surface can provide information on wind speed, momentum flux, and stability in the marine surface layer. Application of Doppler lidar to obtain simultaneous or near-simultaneous remote measurements of wind and turbulence parameters within the radar scattering volume provides an excellent means of investigating relationships between radar scattering properties and atmospheric boundary layer conditions. Although wind and turbulence properties of the surface layer can also be measured using ship-based, in situ instrumentation, the remote lidar observations are advantageous because they do not perturb the radar scattering volume
