  • Abstract
The authors discuss the strategy and implementation structure used by the Ford Motor Company, General Motors, and their suppliers to achieve world-class quality and productivity in selected processes. The approach discussed (comprehensive process control planning) recognizes that quality is not an added function, but is a natural part of the normal production activities. Emphasis is placed on the control of the process instead of the detection of nonconformances (a target not tolerance basis). The process is considered as a total entity, and a structure is provided to utilize the tools and techniques available and to build upon the experiences and successes of the past. The approach provides for continual improvement by making planned periodic improvement and evaluations an integral part of the system. The philosophical and organizational struggles which were encountered and resolved in the implementation of this strategy are discussed. The Ford Motor Company AXOD program is considered as a case study
