Abstract :
The UK is in a relatively strong position with respect to today’s broadband services to customers. However, the move to next generation access networks is continuing internationally, with announcements from a range of providers. These announcements have been made for a number of different reasons — this means that the situation for next generation access in different countries is likely to show significant variation. Despite this, it is important that the regy approaches to next generation access are clearly articulated, to avoid the risk of inefficient delays to investment. It is for this reason that Ofcom has recently consulted on the principles and a number of specific approaches that could be adopted in respect of next generation access networks where such regulation is necessary.
