Abstract :
Analysis using a snowpack scattering model was carried out to obtain the backscattering coefficient, which was measured by a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) mounted on the satellites JERS-1 and ERS-1. Results of the analysis showed that JERS-1 SAR is effective for measuring snow depth and water content in wet snow, and ERS-1 SAR is effective for measuring snow depth and grain size in dry snow. Also, the results of a comparison of data obtained from ERS-1 SAR and ground truth data of snowpack in Hokkaido area showed that this method of analysis is valid for estimating snowpack parameters
