Abstract
Punctured convolutional codes result in some savings in the complexity of Viterbi decoders, compared to other codes of the same rate. However, in general use of the punctured structure in the decoder results in a performance loss for trellis codes, due to difficulties in assigning metrics. The authors provide constructions for punctured rate-2/3 codes based on decomposition of the metric into orthogonal components. These show no loss in performance for trellis coded QAM and PSK
