Abstract :
Summary form only given. Automation is an evolutionary process in the manufacturing industry throughout the world. In my view, therefore, automation will continue as long as it is economically justifiable. The characteristics of automation, however, will change drastically over the next decade. Even today, automation, which was originally introduced to replace or supplement human labor, has become capable of replacing or supporting even the thinking process. Computers can support and enhance human capabilities of judgment, control, and communication. With these initial observations, I focus on the issues of why and in which areas R&A will continue to develop
