Abstract :
A simple model for preattentive texture perception/discrimination is suggested. According to this model and with the introduction of local vector mapping (LVM) for texture description, a new algorithm for texture edge detection is developed. The algorithm basically consists of two steps, namely, intensity slicing to decompose complex forms into simple features, called textons, and textural transform to transform textural differences into gray-tone differences. Experimental results show that the algorithm has a number of desirable features such as the simplicity of the structures it uses, the consistency of the approach with the human visual system, and the accuracy of the detected texture edges
