Abstract :
Recently, more attention is given to harmonic assessment of nonlinear loads due to the penetration of such devices on power systems which cause detrimental effects to the power system and other users. In order to quantify these distortions precisely, two commonly used topologies for implementation in Personal Computers (PCs) are modeled and accurately assessed. These are forward and flyback converters. Two simple non linear models are also introduced to compare their generated harmonics with those produced by forward and flyback converters. The effect of adding EMI filters on the lower order harmonics is also assessed. Moreover, the impacts of installing an active Power Factor Correction (PFC) circuit on the harmonics generated are quantified.
