Abstract
Automated recognition of traffic signs is an important issue for driver assistance and autonomous navigation systems. Those systems have to be fast and robust to detect signs in real-time and recognize them precisely. In this paper, we present a HW/SW system for detection and recognition of circular traffic signs mainly based on color and shape properties. The designed system has been implemented in a CYCLONE II DE2 Board using the Nios II softcore processor which is characterized by its flexibility and programmability.
