Abstract
Summary form only given. For the success of heavy-ion driven fusion, it is critical to have a full understanding of the behavior of high-current, space-charge dominated ion beams. The necessity of including the self-fields of the beam makes particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation techniques ideal. For this reason, the three-dimensional PIC/accelerator code WARP3d has been developed to study the creation and propagation of ion beams. Several applications of WARP3d relevant to heavy-ion fusion are discussed. The emphasis is on the utility of three-dimensional, first principles simulations in the applications. Comparisons with experiment are presented.
