Abstract
The authors present two different approaches for the calculation of instantaneous quantities in joint time-frequency analysis. They specialize it to the case of instantaneous mean frequency and its spread. They consider bilinear distributions such as the Wigner and Rihaczek distributions and show that there are an infinite number of bilinear distributions which give positive expressions for the standard deviation of frequency at a given time
