Abstract
In this paper we describe the implementation of a complete 128-tap (16-ms span) digital voice echo canceller on a Texas Instruments TMS32020 programmable signal processor. A block update method is used in the filter coefficients adaptation. The method exhibits better convergence properties and computational efficiency than the standard stochastic gradient method. The echo canceller implementation features a direct interface for standard PCM codecs and meets the requirements of the CCITT recommendation G.165. A hardware demonstration system has been constructed and tested and its performance exceeds that of commercially available products.
