  • Abstract
    A new wavelet video coder is proposed which uses entropy-constrained trellis-coded quantization to quantize the inter-frame prediction errors of the decomposed subband data. The video sequence is first spatially decomposed into several subbands and motion compensated in the frequency domain. A simple switching mechanism is used to decide between inter-frame and intra-frame coding on a macro-block basis. Symmetric codebooks have been designed for the quantizers assuming that the subband signals are approximated by a generalized Gaussian source. The output rate is controlled by a feedback quantization control mechanism, leading to a fixed-rate system. Simulation results reported for the “Miss America” sequence, indicate that the proposed codec has a very good rate-distortion performance
