Abstract :
The universal remote alarm system (URAS) is a unique device that is composed of a laptop computer, which receives audible alarm signal from a microphone, digitizes it by using a built-in sound card, compares the input to a library of known audible alarms characteristics, and if a match is detected, can then trigger an output device, such as a strobe light. The system is designed by using virtual instrumentation and object oriented Labview graphical programming. The expert system is used in determining the criticality of alarms and also for the comparison of alarm sound with competing or background noises.
