Abstract :
The authors present robust techniques for estimating the arrival of C and S waves from an acoustic well log trace. The first technique, based on the Allan variance, will detect the arrival of the compressional wave. The second technique is based on a modified version of the Wigner distribution, which allows for more efficient computation. This modified Wigner distribution (MWD) is applied to the wavetrain of the acoustic well log, and the S wave arrival is identified from this analysis
