Abstract :
A time-frequency formulation is proposed for the optimum detection of nonstationary Gaussian signals in Gaussian noise, with emphasis on low-SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) situations. Time-frequency correlators are shown to match mathematical optimality with a physically meaningful interpretation when they are based on the Wigner-Ville transform. Two illustrations of the properties of the corresponding receivers are discussed: the first one is related to random time-variant channels and the second one to detection in presence of clutter
