Abstract
This paper proposes a unified design method of state-space digital filters using system balancing concept. This method is formed by applying a newly discovered relation between the balanced realizations and the optimal realizations of digital filters to the approximation method that results in balanced realizations. It can perform the approximation and the synthesis problems of the filter design simultaneously and efficiently, and can yield suboptimal digital filters which approximate given impulse responses closely and suppress limit cycles.
