  • Abstract
This paper describes the implementation of a DC motor/synchronous motor drive test-bed. The system consists of a 3.3 kV DC motor and the synchronous motor of the motor-alternator set (MA-set) of a Class 6E locomotive. The synchronous motor is controlled by a back to back AC-DC-AC hard switched power converter with a sustained rating of 50 kVA and a peak rating or 100 kVA. The power converter is controlled by an Intel 87 KC196 microcontroller and hardware-implemented current regulators. The system was developed to provide a facility for the testing of motor drives. In the current set-up, the system is used to simulate a load of high inertia for the 3.3 kV DC motor drive used by a traction system project
