Abstract
Summary form only given, as follows. The West Virginia University Hot Helicon Source is a large area (16.5 cm diameter) steady state helicon source. The source is designed to provide plasma for space simulation experiments and as a testbed for studies of large format helicon sources. Unique features of the source include a laser induced fluorescence diagnostic for measuring the ion density and temperature and an additional RF antenna system for ion cyclotron resonant heating of the ions. The source has been completed and we will present initial standing wave measurements of the magnetic field structure and measurements of the density profile as a function of distance downstream from the antenna. We will also present measurements of the density on axis as a function of driving frequency and antenna wavelength.
