Abstract
The following topics are covered by this presentation: intelligence in IP networks, today and tomorrow; enabling intelligence in networks with active networks; active network for opening up the networks to “intelligence”; features of the active network in the field of service providing; targeted applications; directions for further studies. The author draws the following conclusions: studies and research since 1995 show that the active network must now be confronted to industrial needs; the need of new services means a new architecture; the active network allows action from inside the network, with the use of network related information providing better or new services; the active network has high potential for service providers
