Abstract :
An array of triaxial geophones in N. Carolina has been used to estimate components of simultaneous plane Rayleigh and Love waves based on the facts that the only vertical components are due to the Rayleigh wave, and that Love waves have only horizontal components. Our procedure is distinct from previous work both in spatial smoothing, wherein all diagonal elements of submatrices combine adding noise, and in processing all array elements, where coherent methods of combining had not previously been found useful.
