Abstract
A real-time training system for acquiring skills for writing Japanese letters is presented. This system uses character recognition techniques. The system can evaluate, coach, and explain the skills of penmanship. The system stores a handwritten Japanese character database and the knowledge of writing skill in a rule-based paradigm. The system can supervise how the user writes/inputs letters on the writing pad with a pen, and evaluates the writing skills such as stroke order, writing speed, letter shape, and allocation of subpattern. Each time the user finishes writing a letter the system shows what should be corrected and how to improve the letter by visually drawing a corrected letter following the input letter on the display
