Abstract
This paper proposes a novel approach to defining orientation relations. The approach understands an orientation relation as a distance comparison relation and provides a unified explanation for three commonly used orientation reference frameworks. The paper shows in detail that the novel perspective provides a unified method to define existing qualitative orientation representations and quantitative orientations as well. This new perspective reduces the number of primitive relations in spatial knowledge representation and reasoning.
