Abstract :
Direct adaptive control is applied to the active vibration damping problem in large space structures (LSS). The method outlined exploits the dynamical properties of LSS in order to modify the established stable adaptive methods [1-4] so that the closed-loop infinite dimensional system is BIBO stable in the large. An example, the control of a flat plate, is used to demonstrate the performance of the design when modal frequencies and shapes are varied and when there is an actuator-sensor failure.
