Abstract
The development of manipulator control languages in the United States is traced from WAVE, through AL to PAL. The WAVE language was developed in 1970 to provide for force and motion control of a manipulator using homogeneous transformations as a basic data type. In 1975 the AL language provided for control of objects held by the manipulator. AL was a high level language providing the control and statement forms of ALGOL. The PAL language, presently under development, is an attempt to provide the object manipulating capabilities of AL with the flexibility obtained by using low level manipulation control primitives.
