Abstract :
In spite of huge advances in measurement technology in the past two decades, separating the influence of the instrument from the measurement continues to challenge ocean engineers. This session includes three fascinating papers which illustrate this problem. The first paper quantifies the response of a new spar buoy design. The second teases out the influence of wakes on high resolution velocity measurements in very low flows. Finally the third paper introduces another solution to the measurement of velocity by an acoustic Doppler profiler near the instrument and near the surface.
