Abstract
The application of fuzzy logic theory to edge detection is studied. The main measure used in characterizing edge membership functions (EMF) is an edge sharpness measure called acutance. After giving the definition of fuzzy images as well as the general approaches used in determining the EMF, the definition of fuzzy edges as well as the acutance measure are described. Two EMFs are then studied using a synthetic ultrasound echoendoscopic medical image. It is clearly shown that the selection of an appropriate EMF is of crucial interest in fuzzy edge detection
