Abstract :
The performance of two optimal design methods, Hooke Jeeves and, respectively, genetic algorithms, are compared in terms of performance and computation time effort in an exercise design of induction machine for air conditioning drives in automotive applications. Both methods use a global cost function that could be balanced, between initial active material cost or their total weight and motor efficiency, by choosing adequate weighting factors. The comparison is illustrated by a case study design (2.5kW, 9000rpm, 42Vdc) which essentially shows the Hooke Jeeves method with 50 random starting variables vectors 40%less computation time intensive for about the same final results.
