Abstract :
Recent progress in advanced coding schemes for optical communications is reviewed. Each of the various types of forward error correction codes is classified as belonging to one of three generations. A block turbo code (BTC) and low-density parity-check code (LDPC) are promising candidates for third-generation FEC, having a net coding gain of 10 dB or more.
