Abstract :
The microscopic mechanism of the electrooptic effect is discussed, taking into account the piezoelectric lattice deformation and the change of electronic polarization due to the Kerr effect. The electrooptic effect in BaTiO3 is investigated quantitatively. The nondiagonal electrooptic constant r13 in the clamped state is calculated by making a comparison with the diagonal electrooptic constant r33 in the clamped state
