Abstract :
Summary form only given. The development of the communication network in the USSR is largely provided by installation of urban and long-distance optical fiber communication lines. Equipment that allows bit rates of 8, 34, and 140 Mb/s in data transmission over graded-index and single-mode fiber-optic cables at 1.3-μm wavelength is designed and manufactured. Equipment for transmission of digital TV broadcast signals over a single-mode fiber-optic cable is now commercially available. Also available to the users are instrumentation means and cable termination and welding apparatus. The design of a new generation of equipment intended for transmission at an operating 1.55-μm wavelength at a rate of up to 560 Mb/s is nearing completion
